Why this verse?

What saith the Scriptures about Emmanuel.

One of the loveliest titles for our Lord Jesus Christ is Emmanuel. Why, well it means "God with us" and reminds us of how our Lord Jesus Christ left the glories of Heaven to be with us here on this earth, to die for our sins and is today with us. In this article we are going to look at what the Scriptures say on this wonderful title, Emmanuel. Before we turn to the Scriptures, I should point out that the Hebrew term for Emmanuel is Immanuel. Now turn with me to

Isaiah 7v14: Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

In the verses preceding this one King Ahaz had refused God's invitation to ask for a sign. However, God in His mercy gives Ahaz a sign anyway. The name Immanuel is here linked with a virgin birth, the only one ever, which was Mary giving birth to Jesus. The sign was to prove that God would be with His people, Judah, and protect them from the Syria-Israel alliance. It is a wonderful reminder to us today that God is with us today to protect us from our enemies.

Matthew 1v21-23: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Here in Matthew, we have the prophesy of Isaiah, that we just read, being fulfilled in Jesus.

Mark 15v34: And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Elo, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Hebrews 13v5: Let your coversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Matthew 28v20: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

It is wonderful to consider how our Lord Jesus Christ, was forsaken of God, that He might never forsake us. It is a wonderful promise that Jesus has given us that He will be with us always, even unto the end of the age.

We could turn to other verses to see how Jesus is indeed God with us. However, I think it is clear from the verses that we have looked at that Jesus is indeed God with us, Emmanuel. We need to remember His promises were always directed towards His people, those who have trusted in Him as Saviour. If you haven't trusted in Him as a Saviour then perhaps you might like to go on and read what saith the Scriptures on why Christ came, by clicking here.
