Why this verse?

What saith the Scriptures on the Lamb of God.

You may have heard of the Lord Jesus Christ being referred to the Lamb of God many times, but have you ever stopped to wonder what it means? Well in this article we are going to look at what the Scriptures say about the Lamb of God. Turn with me to

John 1v29: The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world".
and John 1v36: And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Twice in the first chapter of John we read of John the baptist, calling Jesus the Lamb of God. On the first occasion he gives his hearers a bit more of an insight when he says he is "the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." But why does John use this title when talking about one who can take away our sins? Turn with me to

Exodus 12v3-5: Speaking ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish ...
Exodus 12v13: And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Most of you will know the story here. God having already sent 9 plagues upon Egypt is preparing to send the tenth. Moses and Aaron are commanded to tell the Israelites to take a lamb, to kill it and to smear the blood upon the door posts. Then they are to eat the lamb roasted. Upon seeing the blood God will pass over the house and not kill the first child born in that house. Christ is the Lamb of God in that when God sees us washed in His Son's blood, He will spare us from the judgement we deserve. Just as the lamb here had to be without blemish, Christ was without sin and just as the lamb could never be too small for the household, Christ cannot be too small for the entrie household of faith.

Leviticus 17v11: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Hebrews 9v22: And almost all things are by the law purged with blood: and without shedding of blood is no remission.

According to God's law, it was blood and blood alone that could pay the price for our sins and redeem our souls. Before Christ came it was the blood of animals that was offered up, but there on the cross of Calvary the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ was shed to pay the price for our sins and redeem our souls.

Isaiah 53v7: He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

Prophesising of Christ's death, Isaiah compared it to that of a lamb. It is interesting to note that this was one of the verses that the Ephiopian eunuch was reading, when Philip drew near and peached unto him Jesus (Acts 8v26-40).

1 Peter 1v19: But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Here Peter reminds us of how we are redeemed by the precious blood of Christ before going on to remind us of how he was like a lamb without blemish or spot. Again reminding us of Christ perfection.

Revelation 5v6: And I behold, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain ...

John now takes us on to a future day, when Christ will take His rightful place upon the throne, again comparing him to a Lamb that had been slain.

We have seen from many Scriptures that our Lord Jesus Christ most certainly is the Genesis 22v8: And Abraham said, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering ...

There are other verses one could turn to on the subject of our Lord Jesus Christ being the Lamb of God, however, it is clear that it is an accurate description of one who was offered up as a sacrifice for our sins. It is wonderful to look forward to that day when in Heaven we will meet Him, I trust you have trusted in Him as your Saviour.
