Why this verse?

What saith the Scriptures on the Gift of God.

As Christmas approaches I thought it would be good to look at the reason why we give presents at Christmas. We give presents at Christmas because about 2000 years ago God gave us a present. Let us take a look at what the Bible says about this gift.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, (Isaiah 9v6)
Jesus was born of Mary however, unlike every other child, He existed long before He ever entered His mother's womb. For while this verse tells us a child is born, it also tells us a Son is given. Jesus was God's Son long before He was ever Mary's son. Before even this world was created, Jesus was God's Son and yet He was born of Mary. How well Paul wrote these words: "without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh" (1 Timothy 3v16). We are not called to understand this great truth but to simply believe it.

But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (Romans 5v15)
How much will this gift cost you. Nothing it is a free gift. When we give someone a gift at Christmas we don't expect them to pay the price, we pay that, and so has God. God paid the price by sending His Son into the world to die for our sins that we might be live.

The gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6v23
So what is this gift? It is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. That is that we might have eternal life through believing on the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour. Believing that God sent His Son, to be born of Mary, to live a perfect life and to die on the cross of Calvary paying the price for our sins.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2v8-9)
These verses remind us that Salvation is the gift of God. It is not by good works that we can earn Salvation, it is a gift that we just have to accept. It is a gift that is open for all to receive, it is not dependent on anything we can do.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him might not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3v16)
So why did God give His only begotten Son as a gift to us? Because He loved us so much that He could not bare to allow us to go to Hell without stepping in and doing the only thing He could do. Ask any father who loves their son if they would be willing to give up that son, that a friend might live? But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5v8) When someone gives a gift you have two choices you can either take it, or you can reject it. Can I ask have you accepted this gift? Have you believed in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and if not why not do it now? And if you have accepted that gift then join Paul as he says Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. (2 Corinthians 9:15)
