What saith the Scriptures on Masturbation.
Here is another sin that seems to have become acceptable in today's society. We as Christians need to get back to the Scriptures and see what they say about such things.
Genesis 2v24: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh.
Romans 6v12-13: Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of rightousness unto God.
God made our sexual organs for a wonderful purpose. That is that when a man and a woman marry they may become one flesh. However, sadly today those same sexual organs are being used to give us immoral pleasure. Once one starts to masturbate their sexual drive kicks in and they slowly find they need to do it more and more to keep themselves going. It soon develops into an addiction, consuming more and more of their time and energy. As Christians we need to not let our guard down and get carried away with what the world sees as acceptable. If you are already caught up in masturbation please do not despair, carry on reading this article to see how the Lord can deliver you from this sin.
Leviticus 15v16-17: And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even. And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.
Deuteronomy 24v10-11: If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp: But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.
At this point I feel I should point out that there is a difference between masturbation and wet dreams. What we have described in the two verses above are wet dreams. Wet dreams are not a sin, they are merely the body's way of dealing with a build of semen and possibly also sexual frustation. These verses do make clear that anything that gets semen on it should be washed and we should ensure this happens, even if we have to do it ourselves.
1 Corinthians 6v18-20: Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God's.
Masturbation is one of the sexual immoralities that comes under fornication. When one masturbates they are sinning against their own body, as we saw in our previous verse. Our body is not our own to do with what we like with, God has purchased it with the precious blood of His Son, and we should not use it for unholy purposes but to glorify God.
Colossians 3v5-7: Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness,
which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the
children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye
lived in them.
Here Paul reminds us that we need to mortify, that is literally put to
death, various sins, including that of fornication which as we discussed
above includes masturbation.
Romans 6v1-2: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Just because we are Saved by God's grace does not mean that we
automatically stop sinning. However, Paul states quite clearly that we
should not continue to sin. To breakaway from any sin, including
masturbation, we need to make an active decision to leave it behind and
to commit our ways to God.
James 4v7-8a: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you....
2 Peter 9a: The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations...
If you are to overcome this sin, then you will need to submit yourselves unto God. It is not easy to resist the devil but if you draw near to God then He will be near you and will deliver you. Not all deliverance is instant, there are some cases when it is and the person just walks away from it, others have a long hard struggle, but be assured the Lord knows how to deliver you and will do so.
Philippians 4v8: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are
honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if
there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
It has been said that one can not prevent the birds from flying over
one's head, but one can keep them from building a nest in one's hair.
And so we must do so with impure thoughts. While the devil will try and
bring certain things to our minds we need to focus on pure things such
as those listed in the verse above. By thinking on these pure things we
do not give the devil room to plant impure thoughts that will hinder us
and cause us to sin.
James 5v16: Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Remember you are never alone in these things. Not only do you have God ready and willing to help you but there are fellow Christians waiting ready to help you. Now I know it will require great courage for you to go and tell someone about this, and this is where the devil will have a go, trying to tell you how they won't understand or will laugh at you. However, remember the devil is just scared that you are trying to escape the trap he has set for you. There is strength in numbers, and while these things should not be published abroad, I do believe that you need to be able to tell a couple of close friends about this and seek their prayer help in overcoming this.
