Matthew 1v21: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins.

Here in the prophecy Joseph was given of Jesus' birth, he is instructed to call Him Jesus. Why was He to be given this name? Because it meant Saviour and that is exactly what He would do. He would save His people from their sins.

Phillipians 2v9-11: Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name that is above every name; That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in Heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Here we are told that the name Jesus is above every name. In a coming day every knee whether it be in Heaven, on earth or under the earth, will bow to that great name. Every tongue will one day confess that He is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Let us not forget that everything we do, even our worship of our Lord, should be to the glory of God the Father.

Hebrews 1v4: Being made so much better than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Here we are again told that the name of Jesus is more excellent than any name given to an angel. How do we know it is the name of Jesus spoken of here? Well it was the name given to Him when He left the glories of Heaven and came to live a perfect life amongst sinful men and die on Calvary's cross. Had He not died on the cross and saved us from our sins, He could never have been given this most excellent name of Jesus. But thank God He did indeed die on the cross and bore the punishment for our sins there, that He might be our wonderful Saviour.
