Why this verse?

What saith the Scriptures on the second death.

Revelation 2v10-12: Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Those at the church in Smyrna were suffering great persecution. Many suffered horrible forms of death. How fitting it is then that Christ promises to those that overcome that they will not be hurt of the second death. This second death as we will read, will be far worse than the first death.

Rev 20v14-15: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The Scriptures are here very clear. Whosoever is not found written in Christ (the lamb)'s book of life will in a coming day be cast into the lake of fire. This being the second death.

Revelation 21v7-8: He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

What a contrast we have here as we look at what is in prospect for the overcomer, and those that choose not to overcome. Those that overcome inherit all things.
But those that choose not to overcome, have turned their backs on God, and are cast into the lake of fire. They may have been too scared of what the world may say, of having to make changes to their lifestyle, to trust in Christ and be Saved. Some are unbelieving, having heard the Gospel they simply refuse to believe it. Some are liars, possibly those that have said they are Christians but have never accepted Christ as their Saviour, we also read elsewhere that the devil is a liar and the father of lies (John 8v44). Some have put their faith in idols that can never save. Others seeking sexual pleasure have turned their back on Christ. Some have dealt in the occult powers whilst others having turned their back on Christ have committed abominable sins and killed men.
If these had only put their faith and trust in Christ, their sins would have been covered and they would have a place in Heaven, but instead they are cast into the lake of fire.

Now read What saith the Scriptures
on the promise to he that overcometh on Christ and why He came
on the Certainity of Salvation by
believing in the Lord Jesus Christ
